Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our league
General Information
Q: How do I join the league?
A: Begin by deciding which division you want to play in and forming a team or joining a team of players that meet the age level and DUPR skill level requirements of the division and choosing a Captain. Watch for the opening of registration for the inaugural season on dailypb.com, and register your team.
Q: What skill levels do you accommodate?
A: For the inaugural season, the goal is to have four divisions based on age and skill level requirements: Open 12, 50+ 12, Open 14, and 50+ 14. Open divisions are for players of any age. Senior (50+) divisions are for players age 50 and above. A team skill level of 12 means that the aggregate (total) skill level of the four players who play a match for a team does not exceed 12.300, and the skill level of any individual player on that team does not exceed 3.600. A team skill level of 14 means that the aggregate skill level of the four players who play a match does not exceed 14.300, and the skill level of any individual player on that team does not exceed 4.10. If there is enough interest additional divisions at team skill levels of 16 and 18 may be added.
Q: How are skill levels determined?
A: Skill levels are determined using the DUPR rating system. Every player must have a DUPR rating. If the DUPR rating of an individual is reliable (.60 or above), then the rating will be used in calculating the team rating. If the DUPR rating is not yet reliable (below .60), then the rating used for that player to calculate the team rating will be the average of the team skill level. For the 12 level, that is 3.0; for the 14 level, that is 3.5.
Q: How much does it cost to participate?
A: The registration fees will be determined based on court reservation fees, purchase of pickleballs, and any other necessary expenses. This league is non-profit. There is no intent on the part of organizers to make a profit. When registration opens on dailypb.com, the team Captain will register the team and pay the registration fee for the team. The registration fee covers court registration costs and the cost of providing league approved pickleballs for all matches. Team members are responsible for any other costs, including paddles and uniforms, if any.
Q: When does the season run?
A: The inaugural spring 2026 season dates have not been scheduled. The tentative plan is to start in April with a 5-week regular season followed by play-offs and a championship event. The start date and season length will ultimately be decided based on discussion and voting in the forums on this website.
League Format & Rules
Q: What format do matches follow?
A: A match consists of four required games, and in the case of a tie, a fifth tiebreaker game. The required four games include one women's doubles game, one men's doubles game, and two mixed doubles games. All four required games will be played using traditional side-out scoring to 11, win by 2. The tiebreaker game if needed will be played by a rotation of women's doubles partners, men's doubles partners, and two mixed doubles partners playing 4 points each in one game using rally scoring to 21 with the winning point won by the serving team. The team format consisting of two women and two men is a defining characteristic of this league. The point system for regular games and the tiebreaker will ultimately be decided based o n discussion and voting in the forums on this website.
Q: How are teams formed?
A: In most cases, teams meeting the division age and skill requirements will be formed by players on their own, usually at the initiation of an individual who is committed to serving as team Captain. In some cases an organization or group may hold tryouts to select team members. For prospective players who do not have a team, an interest list will be set up on dailypb.com. Established teams may recruit players from that interest list or players on the interest list may take it upon themselves to form a new team.
Q: What equipment do I need?
A: The league will provide league approved pickleballs for all matches. All other equipment is the responsibility of individual players and/or teams. Each player needs a league-approved paddle and court shoes. Uniforms are strongly encouraged, but optional.
Q: What are the rules for substitutions?
A: A team may have up to 8 players on its roster. The four players (2 women and 2 men) who will play in a scheduled match must be determined in advance of the match. The only substitutions allowed during a match are due to injury.
Scheduling & Locations
Q: Where are matches played?
A: Matches will be played at city park courts in the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, and Richmond. Other locations may be added based on need.
Q: What if I can't make a scheduled match?
A: It is the responsibility of the team captain to ensure that four rostered team members (2 women and 2 men) are present at the time and location scheduled for a match. If the four rostered team members are not present within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time, the match is forfeited to the opposing team (assuming that team has four rostered team members present. If neither team has four rostered team members present at the scheduled start time, the match may be rescheduled by the two teams by reserving a court at an agreed upon time and at their own expense.
Q: How do I check the schedule?
A: The schedule of matches will be posted well in advance on dailypb.com, and on this website.
