How To

Understanding DUPR Ratings and How They Shape Our Divisions

By League Admin  |  February 19, 2026

New to DUPR? Here is a plain-English explanation of how the rating system works and why we use it to create fair and competitive divisions.

One of the first questions new players ask is: what is a DUPR rating and how do I get one? It is a fair question, and understanding your DUPR is important for knowing which division you belong in.

What is DUPR?

DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It is the most widely used skill rating system in pickleball, used by both professional and amateur players worldwide. Your DUPR is calculated based on your performance in matches with your doubles partner against other rated players. It is not about who wins and who loses. It is about points actually scored compared to what the combined ratings of you and your partner would predict. You can win and lower your rating if you don't win by the margin the ratings would predict. You can lose and improve your rating if you score more points than would be predicted!

How Do I Get a Rating?

Create a free account at dupr.com. Once you start logging match results, your rating will be calculated. A rating is considered "reliable" once your reliability score reaches 0.60 or higher, meaning you have played enough rated matches for the number to be meaningful.

How We Use DUPR

Our league uses the aggregate DUPR of the four players who play a match to determine division eligibility. For DUPR 12, the four players combined cannot be less than 10.0 and cannot exceed 12.300, and no individual player can be rated higher than 3.60. This creates genuinely balanced competition across all matches.

For DUPR 14, the four players combined cannot be less than 12.0 and cannot exceed 14.300, and no individual player can be rated higher than 4.10. This creates genuinely balanced competition across all matches.
