A Concise Description of East Bay Team Pickleball League (EBTPL) Format & Rules

Posted by Michael Strait ✏️ Edit this post
It should be expected that particular details of league format & rules may change from season to season. For those who follow professional Major League Pickleball (MLP) and/or elite amateur Minor League Pickleball (MiLP), you know that is true in those leagues and we expect it will be no less so for our local community team pickleball league.

That said, what follows is a concise description of our EBTPL match format and rules as we enter the Summer Season, 2026. If you have questions you haven't found answers to in the FAQ or other sections of the site, post them in this part of the Community Board.

The format and rules described here apply to all Divisions equally.

A match is played by two women and two men representing each team, and consists of 8 regular games plus a tiebreaker game if needed. The 8 regular games include 2 women's doubles games, 2 men's doubles games, and four mixed doubles games. The mixed doubles pairs (one woman, one man) can be repeated for two of the mixed doubles games, or the pairings can be alternated for each of the four mixed doubles games. Every player representing the team in a match must play in four games. No substitutions allowed except in the case of injury during the match.

The games are played in this order: Game 1, Women's Doubles, Game 2, Men's Doubles, Game 3, Women's Doubles, Game 4, Men's Doubles, Games 5-8, Mixed Doubles.

Scoring for the 8 regular games is Side-out to 11, win by 2. One one-minute time-out allowed per team per game.

If at the conclusion of the 8 regular games each team has won 4, then a tiebreaker game is played to determine the winner of the match.

Scoring for the tiebreaker game is Rally to 21, win by 2 on serve. There will be no time limit on tiebreaker games except for the end of the court reserved time. No time-outs are allowed in the tiebreaker game.

Home and Away designations will be used when the schedule permits each team to play every other team twice. In that case, the Home team in the first meeting will be the Away team in the second meeting. In this case, the Home team will choose to serve/receive each game, or to choose starting end of the court. The Home team gets to see and respond to the Away team's lineup, including mixed doubles pairings for regular games and tiebreaker if needed.

When the schedule does not permit every team to play every other team twice, then a Coin Toss (or similar random procedure) will be used to determine each teams options. The winner of the Coin Toss may choose Home/Away, Serve/Receive, or Starting End of Court. The loser of the Coin Toss may choose between the remaining two choices.
